When making wood inlays from veneer, What do you put as a backer on the veneer?
Question says it all. I am interested in using veneer to make some wood inlays how ever from what i have found on the internet i see that people use paper tap, "gum tape" and from what i have searched for i have been unable to find this product. So i am looking for an alternative to this type of tape. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
You should not have to use paper tape (which you can get from most woodworking supply sites). I used to work in a veneer splicing factory when I was a kid and we used paper tape to tape splits in the veneer. After the veneer was glued to a substrate, the tape was sanded off.
To glue your inlay in place, use liquid hide glue (Titebond makes it). This will give you a long open time (time to work with it before it sets up) and it is reversible if you need to change something. Gentle heat and moisture will release it. Liquid hide glue is a new twist on an old school product (hide glue in a hot pot).
I would not use rubber or contact glue as these are (IMHO) not suitable for wood inlays.
