What is the difference a cross-over and a patch RJ45 cable?
I am after a RJ45 cable to connect between my computer and the modem/router for the internet. But I see that there are two variations - a cross-over cable to connect two computers and a patch cable to connect to a network.
As far as I can see, they both look the same with the same RJ45 connecters. So, if I buy one (e.g. the cross-over cable) will it work for connecting to a network as well?
Thanks
Hi There,
Both of the other answers are very good.
What you need is a patch cable to connect your computer to your router.
A crossover cable has the send and receive wires reversed on one ends.
Thus the send pin on one end connects to the receive pin on the other end. ( send to receive ...... receive to send )
A crossover is used to connect two computers together to make a wired netword for file and printer sharing. Also the client computer can use the host computer's internet connection if it is configured.
below is a link showing the 'pinout' connections of both types of cable.
Hope this helps,
Al
