What is the difference between an Epiphone Les Paul Special and an Epiphone Les Paul Special plain top?
What is the difference between the plain top and the non plain top guitars shown below? And which would you recommend?!

The plain top has a plain, ie unfigured, maple cap on the mahogany body, whereas the other with have a maple cap with a more attractive grain. It means there is no fancy grain pattern, which drives the price of the guitar up. It makes no audible difference whether the maple cap is plain grain or a highly figured top, so the guitars are very similar in sound. Go to a shop though and play several examples, as the quality will vary from model to model, as with any make, but there is no audible difference between the two.
