I am what most of those here would describe as a 'liberal'. I also wager that I am one of the few that post on this board regularly that has actually read "Conscience Of A Conservative" by the late Senator Goldwater. The Senator was, above all else, a gentleman. He believed in the battle of ideas and would not participate in character assassination, epithets and personal attacks. He also disliked racial discrimination and thought that mixing religion and politics was dangerous. He had no tolerance for the brand of supposed conservatism practiced by the blowhards on right-wing radio who are actually usually right-wing authoritarians or shills for the Republican Party.
It is a shame that people such as Goldwater and Buckley have passed on. Those currently pretending to be conservatives could learn a great deal from two men I have only been able to read about (I am too young to have seen much of them while they were alive.)
