fender stratocaster volume pot problem?
Heres the deal: i bought a new 1960 reissue custom shop stratocaster about 2 years ago. now, im starting to have some issues with the volume pot. when i turn it down as low as it will go, im getting a terrible hum but if i turn the knob up to 1 or 2, then the hum goes away. i dont know if i need pot cleaner, if i have a bad ground, or if i need to replace the pot. any help would be greatly appreciated
Hi! When the full range of a volume or tone control is not exercised regularly, the contact surfaces can become oxidized. Sometimes just rotating the control knob through the full range of motion (rapidly) will clean off the surfaces and reduce noise. If that doesn't work, expose the control (remove the pickguard assembly from the body) and spray contact cleaner (available from you local electronics store) into the opening at the base of the control, and rotate the shaft. It may be that the control (if heavily used) is worn to the point of needing replacement; in that case, volume potentiometers (same unit is used for tone) are available from a number of on-line and local sources. One other possibility is that the capacitor on the pot (used to preserve highs when reducing volume) has gone bad. Just disconnect it to see if that makes a difference. I don't think (from your description) that there is an external grounding problem, as you would have the noise present no matter where the knob was turned. Hope some of this helps. Best regards, Dana
